Introduction:

“FPT's dream of making software started on September 13, 1988.

Soft we always have to be super

Still hard must be strong

Make customers happy

We live happily

And that was a “silly” dream. I always tell the next generations: Don’t believe in our “business sense”. Society is hungry, only needs food, clothing and shelter. Personal computers have just been introduced, can be counted on the fingers. Who cares about software? But they set up the ISC Computer Center and invited all the experts. Of course, there were no customers, my first teachers had to give up: Mr. Cong left; Trung Ha went to the bank to do finance; Vo Mai established a new company; The number 1 programmer in Vietnam at that time, Mr. Do Cao Bao, also followed Mr. Bui Quang Ngoc to switch to business, “saw” customers.

I joined FPT to make software, and left FPT to train and "incite" others to make and use software to build their own careers. At the end of 1998, at the "Dien Hong - Do Son" Conference, when Mr. Binh announced the Software Export strategy, in the original founding group, I was the only one still absorbed in "soft". It can be said that it was because I didn't know what else to do. In life, sometimes we build a career just because we know how to do one thing. At that conference, I spoke up to tell a story: A tribal chief came back from visiting the fields and reported to the villagers: crop failure, the situation was critical, they were afraid they wouldn't even have shit to eat, but the good news was that I had found a huge pile of shit. That was Software Export.

It's true. A bunch of foreign language idiots, outdated technology. Skills that we know they don't need. What they need, we don't know. And also very high self-esteem. I always remember the comment of Phan Phuong Dat, a colleague: "We keep claiming to be smart but we are not qualified to work for hire, we have to change." The storm eventually passed. It wasn't until 2007 that the leader said: Now I believe that software can make a lot of money. I didn't really believe it either, but at that time I had been "Soft" for so long, now I can't be "Hard" either. In 2023, FPT Software (FSOFT) reached a revenue of 1 billion USD from the foreign market. It was also a memorable milestone. This book is like a thank you to all the bosses, seniors, colleagues and generations of FPT programmers.

This is a book about the history of FSOFT, structured according to Edgar Schein's 4+1 theory of corporate culture formation. The book is aimed at the next generation of FSOFT leaders, ambitious "startups" who want to turn their company into an empire, and anyone interested in corporate culture.

The book is structured into 6 parts. Each part is divided into Chapters, or Themes, to explain a phenomenon from a cultural perspective. Each chapter, usually featuring the main characters, is structured into 3 parts: stories, commentary, and discussion questions (if any).
